Matriculation and STPM students just got their result not long ago. So, how was it? I hope you get what you really wanted and that result is qualified for you to pursue your desired course. Well, in this blog, I'm going to share about some medical interview tips.
The proverbs said: " Don't cross the bridge until you've come to it. " Do you really agree that? Do you want to prepare for your interview the very last minute and burn the midnight oil nights before the actual date of interview? If I were you, I won't. I'll try to read as much articles and recent news as I could.
In year 2017, I just got one interview from UPM out of 4 others medical schools which are UM, UPM, UMS, USM. Well, maybe I'm just not that lucky? Haha. Well, let me give you some tips on medical interviews.
In recent years, most of the local medical schools are changing their interview style from panel interview to station interview, which is similar to the medical school exam called OSCE - a situation stations based exam. In panel interview, I would consider it a traditional method of interviewing as it would be like 2 to 3 doctors in front of you and ask some questions such as why would you want to be a doctor or why did you choose this university or what is your strengths and weaknesses or why should we choose you. On the other hand, for the station interview it is harder as it involves situation-based critical thinking skills and also might involve a standard patient. From my advice, prepare for both types of interviews and be surely you get a good answer for yourself and the panels for why you want to be a doctor, as to me this is the most important question in your entire medical pathway.
These are several stations during my time in my UPM interview:
1. Watching a video and explain: A mum drove her car to a supermarket with baby on board. Upon reaching the supermarket, the mum parked her car and left the baby alone on board. What is your opinion? Right or wrong?
2. Scenario: You are caught in the cyber café during schooling hours. Someone took picture of you in the cyber café and uploaded online. The picture got a lot of negative comments. What do you think?
3. Standard patient: Your friend is sad. Try comforting him and ask what is his problems. After that, you will need to tell your answers to the doctor beside you.
4. Basic question: Why do you want to be a doctor? Why did you choose UPM? What is attracting you?
5. Basic question: Tell me about the curriculum in UPM. The characteristics that a doctors need. (I mentioned about 2-3 with explanations but the doctor keep telling me is it that 2-3 only?)
6. Scenario: You are a medical doctor on duty. Suddenly, there's a call from home where your baby is crying badly and not stopping. You left your workplace without prior notice. What is your opinion? Do you think it is a proper act?
7. & 8. are rest station, where you are obviously pondering about how doomed you are doing in the previous stations hahahaha.
Reminder:
1. Remember to know the 4 medical pillars, which is helpful for you in making judgement. I.e., autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice.
2. Current medical issues - Diseases and conflicts
3. Yes, you shall not forget the Hippocrates Oath
4. Some common questions about yourself such as personalities, skills in handling a problem and time management etc/
5. Answer everything earnestly from your heart. No cheating is needed.
Finally, good luck to my juniors who are going for medical interviews and entering medical school. Wishing you best of the best, I know you can do it. Meet you soon in our workplace one day.
